One of the first albums I bought when I started listening to Eno in the mid-1990s was his soundtrack for Jarman's last film, which was subsequently reworked by Jah Wobble and released as the underwhelming Spinner. That last film of Jarman's was Glitterbug — a great, mischievous title — and was a compilation of his Super-8 films from the 1970s and 1980s. He never saw it finished.

Jarman is primarily known as a film-maker, but if I'm honest I'm not that big a fan of his films.

Blue is, of course, a defining work, and his Super-8 film work had an obvious influence on the promotional videos I've made for Out of Season.

His film Wittgenstein, shot against a black backdrop, within which the actors and key props are placed (theatre-style) is an example of budgetary constraints working to artistic advantage — proof of Brian Eno's dictum that “If you want to get unusual results, work fast and work cheap, because there's more of a chance that you'll get somewhere that nobody else did. Anyone reading him must feel the same incredible sense of intimacy with the voice speaking there. You want to reach out to him; he’s so vulnerable, and courageous, so unfairly vilified. You want to call him Derek.

In 1986, shortly after his HIV diagnosis, he bought Prospect Cottage, a fisherman’s shack in the shadow of Dungeness nuclear power station. During this time, UK was tearing itself apart over its relationship to Europe.

This is not a political album — I have a kind of horror of overtly political music. But like anyone in the UK, I couldn't escape the atmosphere of that time. In particular, the exaggerated and distorted idea of “Englishness”, deep in the national psyche (what the Guardian writer John Harris calls “a set of terms and contradictions about our past”), seemed to illustrate the dangers of nostalgia, or rather the dangers of taking seductive — and possibly false — memories at face value.

Out of Season is about lots of things — my classic “themes” are memory and desire, and there's still plenty of that here. But the album is also a series of attempts to reclaim an older, more peculiar, and more diverse idea of England, which seemed to have been lost recently — the island of misfits and outsiders exemplified by the writings of Derek Jarman, for example, who I was re-reading when I was working on the album.

Derek Jarman had a deep, abiding love for England, but it was a very complicated, critical and queer kind of love — this was very much my mood, when making of this album.

Out of Season is also a love letter to the west coast of Somerset, a place of rugged, strange beauty that I had adored when I was growing up, but hadn't visited for around twenty years.

Starting in 2019, I've been spending increasing amounts of time there, and much of the work of taking Out of Season over the finishing line happened there too, including the shooting of three upcoming videos for “Idlewild”, "White Chalk", and “Southern Soul”.

I wanted artwork that reflected the look of this area, and I found it in the most fitting of places — in the paintings of my high school art teacher, Katy Barrell.

I'd wanted to collaborate with Katy since I was a student of hers in mid-1990s, and with this album I was finally able to do so. Katy's beautiful, semi-abstract landscapes grace the covers of both Out of Season, and the bonus EP, Island of Ghosts.

I've put a lot of care and attention into this release, and I'm delighted (and, I admit, a little nervous) to share it with the world! I hope you like it too.

Daniel

__________________________________________________

Out of Season — 3 November 2023

1.
Today is the first full moon of the new year – the Wolf Moon, to be precise – and also the birthday of my bandmate, Gary, so this seemed like an auspicious day to drop an album teaser called, appropriately enough, "Wolf Moon".

Anybody on my mailing list will have received a free download of the track this morning. If you want a free download, either:

Sign-up to my mailing list here, or

Go to the Wolf Moon page at my Bandcamp and enter £0.00 in the "Name Your Price" section (you will be prompted to provide an email address).

"Wolf Moon" is the somewhat-proggy closing track to what will be my upcoming album of songs. Like the previous single, "White Chalk", it's a little on the slow side – perhaps not fully representative of an album which, while it has its fair share of sad-gaze, also has plenty of light, upbeat and jangly moments.

But more details on all of that shortly. For now, at the beginning of what will be a busy few years of releases, I just want to thank my small but dedicated band of listeners for waiting patiently while I got my shizzle sorted out, and to wish you a happy new year, and a peaceful and prosperous 2023.

Love,

The album is called Crow Covert, and it is the second album in a trilogy of works focused on the landscapes of Somerset. It was recorded at a temporary studio I set up in a holiday home on the Somerset coast, where I've visited every autumn since 2019.

This morning, I have released a new album by my ambient side-project riverrun.

The album is called Avalon Marsh, and comprises two longform tracks, inspired by the landscapes of West Somerset, where the album was recorded in the autumns of 2019 and 2020.

The album is available to stream, download, or purchase on CD, at the following link.

The music is nostalgic, contemplative, and meditative, with a slightly spooky edge - like the landscapes that inspired it.

The CD version is presented in digipak format - a first for me - and contains a mini-essay about the album's creation.

Thank you - all the best, and here's hoping 2021 is much better for everyone.

These works were put together in fits and starts during the past half-decade, mainly at my home studio in London but also on location in the Poole Harbour area. Poole Harbour is a vast, wonderful, but relatively unknown area of natural beauty that I visited and loved as a child, and which I have had the fortune to rediscover again, as an adult, in the past few years. The album is, in many ways, a tribute to the area.

Hello everyone,

I'm happy to announce a new album by my ambient side-project riverrun, called 'Southernmost'. This album is a collaboration between myself and the Californian ambient musician William Delano - but I think you'll find it's very much in the riverrun style.

The album is available now as a digital download, or as a limited edition CD.

You may notice that this new album has been released from a dedicated riverrun Bandcamp page. I've done this to help separate out the various strands of my work - so, my songs, my riverrun material, and other projects will all have their own Bandcamp pages (more on some of those other projects shortly!)

In the coming weeks I'll upload the other riverrun albums, plus a few rarities and curiosities - including some live recordings, and a ten-hour long version of the Lilliput generative composition I released last year!

Thanks as always for your interest!

I'm exceptionally happy to announce that my new album of songs, The Dream Of The Red Sails, is available to pre-order now!

The Dream Of The Red Sails is an album of summery, wide screen Dream-Pop which, for me at least, is the most satisfying and complete album I've ever made.

But don't just take my word for it! I've attached a free download of 'Skindivers', from the album, to this post. And you can pre-order, or find out more about the album, from the links below.

The album will be officially released on January 7th. However, anyone who pre-orders the album from this website will receive the album by December, in plenty of time for Christmas.

The album is available on CD, and you can throw in a bit of extra cash to get an exclusive bonus mini-album called A Certain Kind of Light (which features six new unreleased tracks on it), plus access to exclusive bonus material (including instrumental versions, an audio commentary, and an exclusive unreleased track) – AND, as thanks for your extra support, you will get "thank you" in the album credits!

Click here to pre-order the album

Best wishes, as always

The CD copies of the new riverrun album Lilliput sold out within three weeks, which is a record for a riverrun release. Wow! I cannot thank you all for coming along with me, on this unique little experiment!

I hope that those of you who bought the CDs enjoy them as much as I have enjoyed this whole process.

For those that missed out on the limited run of CDs, you can still download a 'standard' version of the album from my Bandcamp page here, or you can read more about the album and its compositional process here.

I may compile some of the nicer, unexpected and unplanned moments from the larger composition into another release; please let me know if this is something you might be interested in. Either way, some selections from the longer composition will feature on a forthcoming non-narrative riverrun film - and it's also highly likely that I'll conduct a similar experiment for a future release.

Thank you for your continued interest in my music!

I'm very excited to announce a special new album by my ambient side-project riverrun, which is available to order now.

The album is a long, evolving piece of music that runs to over 50 hours in length – and each CD copy of the album contains a unique 60-minute “slice” of the composition, subtly different from every other copy in existence!

The album is available in a strictly limited run of 50 hand-numbered copies, from this website, where you can also listen to some samples of the piece. Alternatively, a standard (i.e. non-unique) download version will be available from my Bandcamp page in early February, once the CD copies have shipped.

I made A Single Man to document the kind of things I was doing in my solo shows at the time - these shows were similar to acoustic performances, but with an electric guitar, and some nice guitar effects. I came to call them my "ambient solo" sets.

If you want to hear an example, this post contains an mp3 download of my cover of the Red House Painters song 'Mistress' from around this time, which should give you a good idea of what I mean.

A Single Man is a full-length album, and contains hushed, stripped-down versions of Modern Painters songs such as 'Echo & Narcissus', as well as a handful of tracks unique to this release such as 'Amsterdam', 'Cinderella City', and 'Limerick'. It also contains the solo version of 'The Sweetest Lover', later released (in a full band version) on In Love With A Ghost.

This album was released privately and quietly, and I had planned to let it drift into obscurity forever - but then I found a box of CDs that I forgot I had. So now seems as good a time as any to make it available again - if only for a while.

There are around 25 CDs and I have no plans to make any more after they're gone. If anyone wants one, you can get one from my Bandcamp where the album is also available to stream or download.

Enjoy :)

I was commissioned by Expedia to create a generative ambient music composition, featuring musicians from all around the world. It turned out rather well - and seems to be getting some excellent press from Forbes and the like.

The composition is split across 16 videos, with musicians on six continents, each of whom are playing simple musical parts that are designed to work with the others, wherever they are set going. Each musician's contribution is a slightly different length, so in true Eno-style, it should never exactly repeat itself, and each viewer makes their own subtly different version of the piece from everyone else.

I've included the link below in case anyone wants to have a play with it, themselves.

I'm rather happy with how this turned out!

Happy release day to me! I'm pleased to announce that my new album of songs, In Love With A Ghost is now available to purchase worldwide via all the usual platforms - including Amazon, iTunes, and selected independent record stores - and of course, from my own store!

Some exceptionally kind words and reviews coming in, including this one from Primal Music, who said:

"Land demands some kind of greater perspective or respect with this album... this is a dreamy, original and somewhat experimental piece of pop music, built on the genius of performance, production, song writing and sound".

But don't take my word for it! The full album is available to listen, stream or buy at the following locations, and there are plenty of CDs available at either of these links as well:

From my website: http://danielland.co.uk/store
From my Bandcamp: https://danielland.bandcamp.com/album/in-love-with-a-ghost

Thanks so much to everyone who bought one so far! All previous outstanding CD copies of the album were shipped on the 1st, 17th and 23rd of this month depending on when they were ordered, and I've also released the digital pre-orders as well.

BUT THAT'S NOT ALL - THERE'S MORE!

SURPRISE! I'm also releasing a second album today.

Disclaimer: this is not a song album. It is the new album my ambient side project riverrun. The new record, Romer Shoal is the fourth riverrun album and may be of interest for any fans of ambient music, particularly those of Harold Budd or Brian Eno (particularly his On Land era).

Like In Love With A Ghost, the album was largely inspired by the time that my partner and I spent in and around the New York area in 2014 and 2015, but this time more focused on the coastal or harbour areas.... I see it as a companion piece to the new song album - alternative sides of the same coin - and for a while I considered releasing the two as a double album.

Having lived with this album for some time now, I think it's possibly the best riverrun album, and definitely my favourite one. In fact, this is one of the few records that I've made that I actually enjoy going back to listen to.

I'm very aware that this kind of music doesn't have as broad an audience as my song work, so for anyone that wants to take a chance on it, you can download the album free of charge for a limited period at my Bandcamp page. There is, of course, also a limited run of 50 CDs for the discerning few of you who still prefer to have physical copies of things ;-)

Please feel free to share this email with any friends you might think would enjoy this kind of music or appreciate the free download!

Thanks everyone,
