wRITING

Writing has long been part of my creative life, and it has taken various forms. When I was about ten, I wrote and illustrated a series of children's books (unpublished, of course—and, in retrospect, pretty awful). Still, the fact that I precociously directed my energy into completing them over the course of a year or so showed a dedication to creativity that later carried over into music.

I’ve also written many essays—some as part of my university studies in English, American Studies, and Musicology at the Universities of Manchester, Westminster, and the London College of Music, respectively—but also simply for pleasure.

More recently, I’ve been working on a memoir about growing up queer in the mid-1990s in a very rural community. It reflects on my coming out, my time as a gay rights activist, and the many ways homophobia can shape relationships and mental health—including my own breakdown in 1999, and the saving power of friends, mentors, and good music and literature. I hope to share excerpts from that work here, along with other pieces I’m currently developing.
